Weaving Mazes: A first approach

In the midst of globalization, where distances get smaller and everywhere seems to be reachable, small coast towns that used to be home for a few hundreds, such as Canoa Quebrada, northeast of Ceará, Brazil, are being invaded by tourists and having their local scenery and traditions drastically changed. This film brings out, solely by the inhabitants' points of view and speeches, the discrepancies and contradictions of their upcoming lifestyle. In one hand, there is the gain of basic structure like water, sewer drainage, internet and electric light. In the other, the growing detachment from neighbors, rising prices and lifecost, and an overall lost of interest in the previous main activities: fishing and needlework. The film is built around two main guidelines. The first one is time - it all happens. visually, during the passing of one day, from the moment the sun rises, till it becomes dark, yet it contains histories that go back years and years. And the second one, is the constructive of the main narrative by their voices, spread and brought together as sewing threads, with no difference of importance or names mentioned. They are all equally worthy of being heard, and their images are never attached to the moment they pronounce their speeches, with one small exception: the eldest woman in town, Agripina, who opens and closes the movie. This project was created out of affection for this city and it's inhabitants, but it is an example of a bigger situation and concern.
