Secrets of Survival

Secrets of Survival

World War Two ripped apart and destroyed millions of families. In order to move on and build new lives, the survivors kept secrets from their newly-created families. In this documentary, we experience how those old secrets are discovered decades later and transform the lives of the new generation. Malka Rosenbaum was raised in Toronto by Jewish parents who had survived the Holocaust hidden in a Polish town. A University student, Malka had been complaining to her mother about the difficulties of being an only child. Her mother then told her there was once another child born in WW2. Malka had a sister and her name was Esther. Her mother told her Esther had disappeared during the Holocaust. Decades later, Malka's 93 year-old Aunt Franiya tells her that Esther may have survived. A shocked Malka is compelled to find out what really happened. The film follows her extraordinary journey to uncover her family's hidden past. On the other side of the globe, Juergen Ulloth recalls the moment when his life changed forever. Excited about getting married, he went to retrieve his birth certificate at the registry office and discovered that his father was not in fact his actual father. His search leads him back into the tangled web of World War Two, eventually as far as the USA to uncover the truth.

This movie blew me away; however not the first time I saw it, I had to watch it twice to truly appreciate the message and the power of this film. Maybe I wasn't fully paying attention or maybe I was too young at the time but I am so glad that I watched it again.
