The Road to Webequie

In the remote island home to Webequie First Nation, a nearby mining development poses new hopes and threats for the local community. Bringing cheaper access to electricity and food, as well as job opportunities for this fly-in community, the mine is making big promises. However, many in town have suffered through years of neglect that has led to poverty and substance abuse, and now recognize the need to return to the foundation of their life on the land. Youth and elders worry that if not handled properly, the mine may bring only short-term solutions, like money and drugs, causing more harm than good. Visiting in both the winter and spring, the film follows the journey of 7-year old Kenisha, and 17-year old Sharmaine and Brennan, students facing difficult and different career choices. With only a seasonal ice road connecting the town 500km to Thunder Bay in the south, many local children move there for education or simply big city life. Something keeps bringing them back to Webequie, though, fighting for the right to call this place home, and make a life there.
