Golda's Story

Self-Initiated Project. The intention of this work is to tell the story of my mother and her journey of survival during Holocaust. I heard her story for the first time in early 1997 when she was interviewed for the 'Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation' that was established by Steven Spielberg. Prior to that the extent of my knowledge was that most of the family died during the war except very few relatives that managed to escape to America, UK and Brazil. My main source of information and inspiration was the recording of this interview. The 13 images are depicting the key events from when the war has started, until the surviving few were liberated from the concentration camp and beyond. All 13 images were created in studio environment using staged compositions. Extensive use of religious items in unusual settings, irony, juxtaposition, dramatic lighting, light and dark backgrounds and usage of symbolism helped me to tell this story. Some of the images are depicting very personal experience while the others more universal to that period in history but all of them reflecting my personal interpretation of these events. This project is just a beginning. Even though I have managed to cover most of the key events in my mother's story - there are many more little stories to tell.
